Traditional dress

Before 1948, every district dressed differently. Ramallah dresses carry dense red cross-stitch panels down the sleeves and skirt. In Bethlehem, women wore the malak, the “queen” dress, in indigo with rich couching stitched over it.

A tree, a cypress, an eye: the motifs worked like vocabulary. Collectors and museums now hold what the villages remember.
