Why this site exists

When a people are under attack, two things are destroyed together: their lives and the record of them. There is already an archive for the footage of what is happening, at archivegenocide.com. This site exists for the other half. It keeps Palestinian culture in the present tense. It keeps a history that starts long before 2023, with the sources attached. The claims ledger gathers the stories that shaped the news and checks each one against the documented record.

Archive Gaza is a passion project for my wife, Lara. We can make a difference. An Arabic edition is planned, and Lara speaks Arabic, so that gap will be hers to close.

Licensing

Unless noted, the text on this site is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0: take it, republish it, build on it, with credit and on the same terms. Images and maps keep their own licences, credited with each one and in the public repository.

How we source things

Every event on the timeline and every entry on the claims ledger links to at least one named source: wire services, humanitarian agencies, courts, UN bodies, or established encyclopaedias. When a statement is contested, we say so, and we link the evidence in both directions. When a claim was retracted or walked back, we link the retraction itself. If we cannot source it, it does not go on the site.

On the claims ledger, each entry carries a status. Retracted or walked back means the source of the claim withdrew or softened it. Never corroborated means no evidence was ever produced. Misleading framing means the words were technically defensible and wrong in effect. Disputed means genuine disagreement remains. Denied, later confirmed means the record eventually caught up.

Language

Words do political work, so we choose them with care. We say Nakba for 1948, because that is what happened and what it is called. We say occupation where the United Nations and the International Court of Justice use the word. We say genocide where legal bodies have put it on the record, with the citation attached. We do not use vague softeners when the documents are precise.

How the site is built

It is a static Astro site. Content lives in markdown files, so adding an entry means adding a file: no code required. The source repository stays private, but the text itself is freely reusable under the licence above: if you want it, take it, with credit.
