Craft and making

Cross-stitch worked on hand-loomed dresses, with motifs and colours that used to tell a woman’s village, her region, and her stage of life. UNESCO inscribed it on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2021 as “The art of embroidery in Palestine, practices, skills, knowledge and rituals”.
After 1948, when many of those villages were gone, the stitch became something else: a national symbol you could make at home, one row at a time.
