Refaat Alareer

A professor of English literature in Gaza City who taught his students to write in English with whatever tools the blockade left, and co-founded the We Are Not Numbers writing project.

His six-line poem “If I Must Die” ends “let it bring hope, let it be a tale”. It circled the world after he was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City on 6 December 2023, along with members of his family. OR Books published his collected work posthumously in 2024.
