Celebrations and the year

Ramadan in Gaza

Streets glow with fanous lanterns. Before dawn, the musaharati walks the lanes drumming households awake for suhur, the meal before the fast. Iftar tables carry soup, then maftoul or rice, then qatayef for dessert, and the mosques fill for tarawih prayers through the month.

Even in the hardest years, the lanterns go up.
