Mahmoud Darwish

Born in Birweh in 1941, displaced with his family in 1948, he became the national poet of Palestine. “Identity Card”, with its refrain “Write down! I am an Arab”, is memorised by schoolchildren. The collections translated as Unfortunately, It Was Paradise carried his work into English.

He died in August 2008 and is buried in Ramallah.
