The hikaye

The Palestinian hikaye is the winter-evening storytelling session, and it belongs mostly to older women. In rural homes the narrator holds the room with tales of jinn, tricksters, and household wit, performed in a musical register between classical Arabic and daily speech.

UNESCO inscribed the tradition on its Intangible Cultural Heritage lists in 2008. The narrators are ageing, which is exactly why it was recorded.
